She graduated ๐with a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Western Australia. During her time there, she was coached by Austin Robertson, a former world professional sprint champion. At the 1947 Western Australia state titles, she won the ๐100 yards, ๐220 yards, ๐440 yards.ย
The following year, she won the national title in the 80m hurdles and became part of the Australian delegation to the 1948 Summer Olympics in London.ย
After winning ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ gold medals in the 1950 British Empire Games, she won her first Olympic title at the 1952 Games in Helsinki. She set a new world record๐ฅ of 11.3 s for the 100 m in Poland 1955, and in the 1956 Olympics she won again in the 80m hurdles.ย ย
In 2014 Strickland was inducted into the โจInternational Association of Athletics Federationsโ Hall of Fameโจ.ย ย
