Of course! There’s lot of creative (and playful) ways to get the job done, and we can learn a little bit about the science of soap along the way – let’s jump in!
Not Your Regular Laundry
With a bright young mind’s imagination there is no limit to how your child will play with their doll, but how do you keep those doll clothes clean?
A regular laundry cycle may prove too much for the rugged-yet-gentle clothes that go with your doll. Invest in a mesh lingerie bag if you don’t already have one, and wash your doll’s clothes on the gentle cycle of your washer. This protects the doll’s clothes while getting them fresh and clean. Feel free to add your own delicates to the bag for washing at the same time, and make sure you use a detergent specifically designed for the gentle cycle. Perhaps test a drop of your laundry detergent on an inconspicuous spot of the doll’s clothing before washing to check for color fading or bleaching.
Air drying is best for your Lottie Doll clothes. Make sure to lay each piece flat and in a single layer on top of a towel to protect the clothing’s shape.
Hand Washing Your Doll’s Clothes
Washing your doll’s clothes by hand is the best way to ensure they are well cared for and last a long time. This method also uses less water and energy and can be done without a special delicates bag.
First, make sure that the sink or tub you are going to use is clean and free of the residue of other cleaning products or liquids. If you’ve used bleach to clean the sink basin, make sure you rinse it thoroughly before refilling with water for your doll’s clothes.
Next, make sure you have a way to keep water in the tub or sink. Rubber pads can be used to cover the drain if your sink’s stopper is broken or missing.
Fill up the basin with lukewarm water. While the water is running, pour a small amount of gentle detergent under the tap. Baby shampoo or mild dish soap can also be used.
When the soapy water is ready, add your doll’s clothes. Feel free to swirl them around with your hands a bit in order to get them really soaked and soapy. Gently moving the clothes around a bit will help activate the part of the soap that sticks to dirt and grime, getting your doll’s clothes nice and clean. However, don’t ruin them by using sponges or other scrubbers – the science behind the soap is enough!
Leave the clothes for a few minutes, then drain the water. Rinse the clothes thoroughly with lukewarm water. Twist the clothes to squeeze out the water, then wrap them in a clean towel and squeeze again. Lay the clothing flat on a towel in a single layer to dry.
