Summertime is all about fun in the sun. And what better way to enjoy a sweltering summer’s day than at the beach or pool? Sun, sand, swimming – the trifecta for ensuring a good time on a hot day.
However, it’s not all fun and games when it comes to summertime water activities. Going to the beach can be quite an endeavor, especially if your children are younger and not very independent. Here are the best ways to have a great time at the beach this summer – safely and easily!
Water Safety
A safe trip is an enjoyable trip, and safety should be the number one priority during any water-focused activity. No matter how good of a swimmer you think you are or how seasoned your little water babies may be, never skimp on safety essentials. Water is especially hazardous, and fatal accidents happen every single day (even with adult supervision).
Here are some ways you can stay safe while still having fun:
-
Protect your pool. Pools should have secure fencing (at least 4 feet tall) that separates them from the house or yard area. This is mandated by law in many areas, and it also drastically reduces the chance of accidents.
-
Swimming lessons. While swimming lessons are not guaranteed to prevent accidents, they can help children become more confident in the water during an emergency. Children as young as four can generally take structured swimming lessons, but even babies can become accustomed to the water too.
-
Supervision is key. Never assume that someone else is watching, and never leave children unattended at the beach, in the pool, or in the bathtub.
-
Stay in designated areas. Don’t swim beyond safety buoys and always follow posted signage. If it’s not safe to swim, stay away!
All of these tips (and more!) can be found here, as well as handy printables and more educational activities. If a big body of water is too stressful for you or your toddler, set up a slip and slide, water table, or sprinkler for a little more low-key summertime fun.
Kids Beach Checklist
A disorganized day at the beach is not nearly as fun as one that is well-prepared for in advance, especially if the children are young! Here is a handy beach checklist to make sure you have everything you need for a fun day of sand and surf (and don’t forget a camera!):
- Safety Gear
- Sunscreen
- Bathing Suit
- Extra set of dry clothes (bring multiples for the wee ones)
- Water Shoes
- Cooler with food
- Drinking water
- Beach umbrella, canopy, or tent
- Towels
- Chairs
- Beach Blanket
- Toys
- Diaper bag with baby essentials (diapers, baby food, bottles, etc.)
- Hats
- Sunglasses
- Jacket or sweater
- Book or activities for the adults
- Bug spray
- First Aid Kit
A note about safety gear: Depending on the activity, this can include a life jacket, puddle jumper, or other personal floatation device (PFD). Make sure the PFD you choose is suitable for your chosen beach activities. And never leave children unattended, even if they’re wearing a PFD or there is a lifeguard nearby.
Pool Ideas
If a relaxing day by the pool is more your speed, there are some things you can do to ensure that a good time is had by all. Here are some tips that will make your day by the pool all the more relaxing and enjoyable.
If the pool is in your backyard, you may want to assign a designated area for all your gear. Things that can make your pool area exceptionally great: a drying rack for towels and bathing suits, a covered changing area, or even an outdoor shower. Set up a rinse bucket in a sunny spot nearby so guests can rinse off any leaves or grass before diving in. This habit will keep your pool cleaner, longer.
If you don’t have a pool of your own, you can still have plenty of fun – just make sure to plan ahead.
-
Make a list and check it twice. A handy pool checklist will keep you organized, but you can probably skip the sand-specific items if the pool has amenities.
-
Keep an eye on the weather. A little rain is okay, but most pools will close at the first sign of lightning or rumblings of thunder. If thunderstorms are on the way, save the pool for another day. This goes for the beach, too!
-
Investigate the amenities. Many pools offer a snack bar, showers, towels, chairs – you name it! Save yourself the extra baggage and plan accordingly. If there’s a super cool water slide, you probably won’t need to bother with any toys.
-
Follow all pool rules. Make sure you know when the pool opens and closes, and if there are any swimming times reserved for specific guests. Some pools may not allow outside food, drink, or glass containers.
-
Bring the fun. If toys and games are allowed, feel free to bring your faves. We have some great ideas here on the Lottie blog!
Always remember, even if there’s a lifeguard on duty – it’s still up to the adults to properly supervise any children. Enjoy your summertime fun at the beach or pool, but make sure to stay safe!
